Abstract:
The objective of this survey research is to examine the smoking cessation services system of health service in Thailand. The surveyed subjects included executives and practitioners in public and private health services from 589 sites. The percentages, standard deviations. and median were used for analysis. The results on some aspects were shown as follows: 1. Policy: Executives knew and were aware of policy on tobacco dependence at 93.3 percent. the existing policy on tobacco control at 96.5 percent, a committee formed on tobacco at 69:2 percent, enhanced motivation tor smoking cessation services practitioner at 64.2 percent, personnel assignment on planning Implementation and results at 78.8 percent, funds supported for health service on smoking cessation services at 51.8 percent and rewarded or honored at 18.7 percent and rewarded or honored practitioners on smoking cessation services at 8.4 percent. 2. Smoking cessation services system (1) Service: smoking cessation services provided were found to be 91 4 percent, most of services are for out- patients at 68.6 percent, smoking cessation clinic provided at 55.0 percent, service on government official working time at 68:5 percent, signs shown for service at 68.9 percent and rooms provided for service at 67.3 percent. (2) Personal: The full-time workers responsible for smoking cessation services at 50.4 percent which consisting of nurses 80.2 percent, doctors 30.5 percent, pharmacists 28.2 percent, dentists 14,4 percent. and psychologists 7.7 percent. (3) Process: asking (Ask) every times of services about smoking behavior at 58.7 percent, recording smoking behavior for each in the medical records at 74,4 percent, advising (Advise) to quit smoking for every smoker and visits at 47.1 percent, evaluating (Assess) on readiness to quit and/or the level of nicotine addiction at 80.1 percent. Assistance for smoking cessation (Assist) Included counseling at 93.0 percent, using medical treatment for quit at 50.1 percent and alternative medicine treatment at 20.9 percent. They did not refer to other smoking cessation services at 6o.8 percent and rotter to Quinine is at 14.7 percent. On smoking cessation treatment follow up (Arrange) at 82.7 percent. (4) Budget: Most health services did not get both external support of any financial and resources at 53.9 percent and did not get Internal support at 47.19 percent. (5) Achievement in 2010: A number of 35 new cases were served on smoking cessation, quit attempt Is at 22 cases and cannot present a number of successful quilt smoking. 3. Problems: Management structure of smoking cessation services is unclear, lack of funding/ resources, lack of knowledge and skills to provide smoking c king cessation, lack of Information to link with referral patents as well as follow up system is not available.
