Abstract:
According to research, smoking behavior in youth develops from the first trial to regular smoking and, finally to nicotine addiction. Results of previous research indicate that adults who became dependent on nicotine, started to smoke before they were 20 years old. Most of them started at the age of 12-14 years. In general, adolescents start to smoke without thinking about the effects of nicotine. Objective of this quasi-experimental study was to assess the effectiveness of a health The main promotion program for anti-smoking behavior among matayomsuksa 2 students in Amnatcharoen province. The anti-smoking program has been designed based on Bandura's Self-efficacy theory and, Life skills concept developed by WHO. There were 80 students included in the s study. Thirty-nine students were assigned to the experimental group while 41 students were assigned to the comparison group. The experimental group participated in the health promotion program for anti-cigarette smoking. Data were collected twice, before and after intervention, through questionnaire. The results of this study indicated that, after the intervention, the mean scores of perception of self-efficacy, outcome expectation, self-esteem, decision making skill, refusal skill and, smoking preventive behavior of the experimental group were significantly higher than before the intervention (p-value = 0.05) and higher than that of the comparison group (p-value = 0.05). In conclusion, the results show that this program can be applied to matayomsuksa 2 students in other schools to promote their skills for prevention of cigarette smoking behavior.
