Abstract:
This study was qualitative research with the objective of studying and analyzing the smoking cessation process, problem, obstacles and solution during smoking cessation and external and internal factors affecting the decision to quit smoking among female smokers in Bangkok province. Data collection was participant observation, non-participant observation and in-depth interview. The key informants were selected by purposive sampling and snowball technique. Data was analyzed by classification and comparison of data including Analysis Induction. The result showed that, there were various types of female smokers, who used two methods of smoking cessation: 1) Self-quitting and 2) nicotine dependency replacement with counseling. However, both types had similarities. External factors affecting the decision to quit were close personal support, social support and also laws related to smoking prevention and consumption control. Internal factors were self-efficacy, changing of attitude towards smoking, concern with the environment and context change. The recommendations for the campaign for female smokers to quit smoking successfully must be varied and specific for each group of female smokers. The government should follow up laws related to smoking especially prohibiting cigarette sales for person aged 18 below and selling of individual cigarettes from a packet. No-smoking attitude should be promoted in the workplace and smoking zone limited. This could force female smokers to make a decision on smoking cessation.
