Abstract:
This study aimed to explore the data related to smoking of nursing students and their family The samples were 7,611 nursing students from 22 nursing institutions which 68.18% were located in the central of Thailand The survey of smoking questionnaire was used as an instrument to collect data during August 2007 to January 2008 The data was analyzed using descriptive statistic The results of survey showed that most of sample (33.80%) was first year students and approximately 28% were second year Most of them (93.90%) were female, approximately 92% were Buddhism, and 36.28 percent of them has birth place at north east of Thailand 'The results of the smoking survey revealed that during last year most of nursing students (94.27%) were nonsmoker About five percent of them had ever smoked, 82.97 percent had smoked not often and have ever smoked for 1-5 years 19.61 percent The results also found that the reason of smoking was stressful (27.45%) For the data of nursing student's family, the results revealed that haft of family members (57.83%) were not smoker Haft of them (42.36%) who smoked were nursing student's father (31.29%) It is also found that approximately 23% of nursing students' peer was smoker, and approximately 29% wanted to quit smoking Moreover, the results showed that most of family members whoever smoked (41.75%) wanted to quit smoking Results of this study illustrated that approximately 80% of the sample had not provided care for smoking patients approximately 60% provided care for at least one smoking patient and 61% provided some helps for smoking patients Approximately 70% of the sample would like parents and peers to quest smoking due to reason that smoking would harm their health and also had been toxicity for smoker and neighbor In conclusion, this study aimed to explore personal data related to smoking in a group of nursing students and their family The investigators suggested for further study regarding to smoking in other students and some issues emphasized on impact of smoking on smoker and neighbor This study recommended that they should have quit smoking program for smoking patient Issue on smoking hazard and adverse of smoking should be regularly campaigned via several kinds of media and these issue should also be include into curriculum
