Abstract:
The aim of this action research was to study the effectiveness of modify smoking cessation program for smoking student in Chiangrai Province. This program developed base on Clinical Practice Guideline in smoking cessation from Chiang Mai Drug Dependence Treatment Center. This modify program consist of 20 activities for 6 weeks and follow up every 1, 3 and 6 month after intervention. There were 325 smoking students in grade M1–M6 from 20 high school included in the study. Data were collected through questionnaire and analyzed by descriptive statistics. The result were as follow: Most of smoking student were male (97%) and among 16- 17 year of age (mean 15.7). Mostly study in grade M3 high school and start smoking at the age of 14-15 years (41.3%). The motivation to start smoking was to try it. Average number of cigarette smoked per day was 2-3 cigarettes. After attendance modify program there were 180 smoking students decreased smoking (55.4%). 78 smoking students quit smoking (24.0%) and 59 smoking students still smoked (18.2%). When follow up this group at 1, 3 and 6 month after intervention, the decreased of smoking were 52.3%, 56.6% and 52.6% while those that quit smoking were 23.4%, 24.6% and 30.5% respectively. In conclusion the result show that this modify program can be applied to high school smoking students to decrease and quit smoking. And it was suggest that some smoking cessation activities such as campaigning against smoking in school, visit patient who received hazardous effect of the cigarette smoking, setting every month follow up after program attendance and expert therapist in smoking cessation program should be included. Furthermore, training of teachers to be a therapists for smoking students are should be concerned and study in the future.
