Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to investigate the parents’ role to prevent smoking of teenage children. 436 highschool students, aged 15-18, were simple randomed from highschools grade 11 of Nakhonnayok Province. The research instruments comprised personal information, smoking behavior and parents’ role to prevent smoking of teenage children, including 3 parts: 1) rejection of smoking, rules of family, and conversation related to dangerous of smoking, and indepth interview. Personal information was evaluated by descriptive statistics. Data assessing smoking behavior and parents’ role to prevent smoking of teenage children were analyzed by t test and Logistic Regression. Data from indepth interview were analyzed by content analysis. The results showed that non-smoking parents took the role to prevent smoking in 3 parts including rejection of smoking, rules of family, and conversation related to dangerous of smoking, significantly higher than smoking parents (p < .01). The difference of parents’ role in rejection of smoking and rules of family significantly affected different smoking behavior among children (p < .01. The parents’ role in rejection of smoking was able to predict 3 times of smoking among their children. The content analysis reflected causes and reasons of smoking that was imitated from familiar and appreciate persons. Children could stop smoking when they saw their family members suffered from illness caused by smoking. They were also empathized their parents for caring to them at a hospital. Accusing and reminding them with smoking decreased their smoking. As a consequence, to reduce smoking behavior among teenagers, more campaigns of parents’ role in rejection of smoking should be made in order to obtain the highest effect.
