Abstract:
The objectives of this research were: to study 1) the level of the success of burley tobacco growers based on special status, economic status, business expansion opportunity, and business system management; 2) the factors affecting the success of burley tobacco growers; 3) the farmers problems and obstacles in burley tobacco growing. The samples were the group of burley tobacco growers in 3 provinces in the lower northern Thailand crop season 2012/13 in Phetchabun, Sukhothai and Uttaradit provinces. The data were collected from 430 farmers out of 14,524 farmers for mixed research. Observation and informal conversation record and the snowball sampling were used for the qualitative research. The 5-point rating scale questionnaires and stepwise multiple regression were employed in quantitative research. The research findings were as follows; 1) the success of burley tobacco growers’ were highest in social status and high in economic status (x̄=4.44, 4.16); moderate agribusiness system management ( x̄=3.45), and for opportunities business expansion (x̄=2.48) 2) the adequate exposure of tobacco low information, technology adoption, acknowledgement of buyer’s market condition and tobacco farmers’ wisdom were the factors affecting the success of burley tobacco growers. The structures of the components affecting the success of burley tobacco growers were: first technologies adoption, followed by tobacco farmers’ wisdom, acknowledgement of market condition, adequate tobacco information exposure and integrity of product delivery; 3) Burley tobacco growers were able to control and solve the problem by themselves on grower area, crop cultivation and cost management control. They could not solve the problem on natural disaster problem.
