Abstract:
The purposes of this correlational research were to identify the prevalence of regular smoking and to examine factors related to regular smoking among male vocational students in Chanthaburi province. Data were collected with self-administered questionnaires consisting of a Personal Information Questionnaire, Smoking Behavior Questionnaire, Attitude toward Smoking Scale, Parental Bonding Scale, Perception of Smoking in Public Place Scale and an Accessibility to Cigarettes Scale. The samples were 236 male vocational students in Chanthaburi province, randomly selected by a multistage sampling tecnique. Statistics including mean, percentage, standard deviation and Binary logistic regression were used for data analysis. The findings of the study demonstrated that the prevalence of regular smoking was 19.5%. The significant factors related to regular smoking among male vocational students were composed ofattitude toward smoking (AOR = 4.46, 95% CI = 1.91-10.39); peer smoking (AOR = 12.48, 95% CI = 1.58-98.58); parental approval (AOR = 4.58, 95% CI =1.89-11.13); parental bonding (AOR = 0.33, 95% CI = 0.15-0.70). Meanwhile, parent smoking, perception of smoking in public place, offering of smoking by friends, peer approval and accessibility to cigarettes were not related to regular smoking. The findings suggested that to develop smoking cessation programs for adolescents, nurses and people involved should be concerned about cooperation from many parties, including peer, teachers, parents, families in order to change attitude toward smoking, and enhance family relationship.
