Abstract:
Hand-rolled cigarettes are as harmful to health as other cigarettes. In Thailand, over half of cigarettes smokers are hand-rolled cigarette smokers and the numbers are increasing. The purpose of this study was to examine the intention to quit in hand-rolled cigarette smokers, and other related factors, using the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB). The sample consisted of 411 hand-rolled cigarette smokers residing in Chiang rai province, aged 15 years and older. by stratified random sampling. Data were collected by face to face interviews. Descriptive statistics, Pearson's productmoment correlation coefficient, and stepwise multiple regression analysis were used for data analysis. The result of this study indicated that subjects had the intention to quit hand-rolled cigarettes at a moderate level. Stepwise multiple regression analysis showed that perceived behavioral control, cessation methods, subjective norms, number of cigarettes smoked per day, and education could explain 31.7 percent of the intention to quit hand-rolled cigarettes in Chiang rai province (p-value <0.05). It is suggested that, to support the intention to quit hand-rolled cigarettes, public health nurses should focus on subjective norms, perceived behavioral control, and inform smokers about the harm from hand-rolled cigarettes to health, especially for those with low education. The government organizations responsible for tobacco control policy should focus on these suggestions.
